Biomechanical Variations
In a place out of time, three figures meet—perhaps not for the first time—and enact a dance balanced between conflict and play
Synopsis:
Biomechanical Variations is an homage to one of Infinite Spark’s central theater practices: the Biomechanics of Vsevolod Meyerhold. The world of the piece emerges with the arrival of a kind of timekeeper who both provokes, and responds to, the stage action. In tandem with the timekeeper’s rhythms, two figures enter, and perform quasi-ritualistic sequences full of striking rhythm, vigorous physicality, and purely theatrical play.
Project History:
Biomechanical Variations was Infinite Spark’s debut with the long-running experimental dance festival, Dances at MuCCC. For the 2026 edition, Infinite Spark was invited to present an original short composition alongside pieces by nine other choreographers. For this piece we drew from Vsevelod Meyerhold’s dynamic physical theater training system, called Biomechanics. Developed over the course of six weeks as Infinite Spark’s first project for Liriope Laboratory, this piece employs elements of existing Biomechanical études in combination with original or unrelated elements, to offer a fresh take on a one-of-a-kind form of physical theater.
Biomechanical Variations premiered in June 2026 at the Multi-Use Community Cultural Center, in Rochester, NY.
Biomechanical Variations was conceived and choreographed by Jon Froehlich & Rachel Kodweis, and was performed in collaboration with Greg Woodsbie
